SUSTAINABILITY IN FASHION: SHOPPING SMART

Writer's picture: Megan HolleranMegan Holleran

I don't know about you, but recently I have found myself getting overwhelmed when going into stores such as Zara, H&M, or Mango. Their styles are cute and are great options for affordable and trendy pieces, but the sheer magnitude of the availability of pieces and frequency which that they are released overwhelms me. Each time I go in, they have an entire store of new inventory. I know that my closet is already overflowing with some of these clothes from over the years, but I know that whatever I have can be easily replaced with ten new things I could find in these stores that day. They aren't unique. I know that these old pieces will end up in thrift stores or eventual landfills. So, instead of buying new all the time, I have started to implement shopping from what has already been cleaned out of other people's closets - secondhand.

Instead of shopping mainly at fast-fashion brands, I have tried to extend my shopping habits into secondhand markets, specifically e-commerce secondhand markets. I have recently been loving apps such as Vinted and TheRealReal for unique, quality pieces that I know I wouldn't be able to get anywhere else. Pieces from quality brands that I know I won't be tossing aside after a season of wear. An added bonus? The price. It's no secret that shopping secondhand is not only sustainable but also shopping economically smart, and this doesn't have to mean skimping on style. Check out below for a highlight of my favorite thrifted pieces found on these platforms.

Tips for Shopping on Vinted & TheRealReal

  • Search by brand

  • Filter by size/condition/price

  • Scroll through "Suggested" pieces

  • Look at pictures and read description - watch out for note of imperfections/stains!

  • Check back often for new items!
