A CREATIVE RELEASE

Allowing my creativity to flow.

I have always considered myself a somewhat artsy person. Whether it be taking those must-see pics at the beach or simply snapping a pic of a tree on my way to class; some things I come across just strike me in a way that must be documented.

Julia and I have talked about this thing we have, a feeling in our chest, when we know something is right. I get this feeling about decisions, people, but also about what I must capture. The feeling is not one of anxiety, it is not a tightness in the chest, but rather an open flutter. It's almost as if my mind and heart are coming into one to say: Yes, this is right.

While this can be applied to more serious things, I find it most commonly apparent in my day to day life. One thing I told myself when I entered college was that I needed to take more pictures. I wanted to take in anything and everything that made my heart and mind do that little flutter inside my chest.

When I take these pictures, it's a quick snapshot of the image in front of me, but it also satisfies a yearning within me to tap into my creative energy. Most recently, I have turned this creative energy into another outlet: collaging.

It started out as a break from final exam studying, I think. My roommate and I would take turns attaching new pieces to the back of our dorm door; the pieces cut out from various fashion magazines and printed from different Pinterest boards. It was mindless, yet fulfilled a need within us that was calling for peace and release. That is what I find when I do things like this, release.

I'm not saying I take a picture of every meal I eat in a day (only when they look aesthetically pleasing), or document my entire walk to class every morning. I also don't rip out every page of a magazine and plaster it onto my wall. I simply pause and take creative moments to release and allow my brain to flow outside of responsibility for a small moment in time. It's a way to make my mind and soul happy.
